Attempt any FOUR questions including Question No. 1 which is COMPULSORY. All questions carry equal marks. 
1. Explain with reference to the context any THREE of the following stanzas. 
(i) The long love that in my thought I harbor, 
And in mine heart doth keep his residence, 
Into my face preseth with bold pretence, 
(ii) Wyatt restech here, that quick could never rest;
Whose heavenly gifts increased by disdain
(iii) A cook they hadde with hem for the nones
To boiler the chikens with the marybones, 
And poudre-marchant tart and galingale. 
(iv) If such affront I labour to avert
From thee alone, which on us both at once
The Enemie, though bold, will hardly dare
Or daring, first om me th' assult shall light. 
(v) Here for his enemy, will not derive us hence: 
Here we may reing secure, an in my choice
To reign is worth ambition, though in Hell
Better to reign in Hell, than to serve in heaven.
2. Write a detailed note on Chaucer's art of characterization. 
3. Critically analyze Satan's character in the light of his speech in Book I of Milton's "Paradise Lost". 
4. Pope's "The Rape of the Lock" is a satire on the 18th century England. 
5. How far would you agree that Samuel Johnson's statement that "in Donne's poetry heterogeneous ideas are yoked together" is a true estimation of Donne's poetry? 
6. Discuss the main features of Surrey as a poet of English sonnets. 
7. Critically examine the following. 
(i) Prioress in Chaucer's Prologue
(ii) They Flee from Me
